For most people the answer is TiViMate on Android hardware and IPTV Smarters Pro on everything else. That covers the overwhelming majority of situations, and the rest of this page explains why, what the alternatives are actually good for, and the one thing about IPTV apps that trips up nearly every newcomer.

The shortlist

TiViMate: the one most people end up on

TiViMate wins on the single feature that matters most for live television, which is the programme guide. It behaves like a cable EPG — a proper grid, channel down the side, time across the top, browsable while something keeps playing in the corner. Nothing else in this category comes close.

The free version handles one playlist and covers ordinary viewing. Premium adds recording, multiple playlists, multi-view for several channels at once, and a scheduler. It runs about $10 a year, or a one-off lifetime licence in the mid-thirties, bought through the separate TiViMate Companion app on a phone rather than inside the app itself, which confuses people.

The limitation is platform. Android only: Android TV, Google TV, Firestick and Android boxes. There is no version for Apple, Samsung or LG and there never has been. Apps in those stores with similar names are unrelated and worth avoiding. Our TiViMate guide covers the setup.

IPTV Smarters Pro: the one that runs everywhere

Smarters is the most installed player in the category, and the reason is reach rather than polish. It exists on Android, Firestick, Apple TV, iPhone, Samsung, LG, Windows and Mac. If you have several different devices around the house, this is the one that works on all of them with the same credentials.

It is free with no paid tier, which occasionally causes suspicion. The business model is that providers pay to have branded versions built; the public version costs nothing and always has.

The guide is functional rather than good, and the interface is dated. But it takes an Xtream Codes login, loads a full channel list, handles on-demand content and catch-up, and rarely breaks. As a default recommendation it is difficult to argue with. Setup is in our Smarters guide.

Smart IPTV, and why it works differently

Smart IPTV — also written SIPTV — is built for Samsung and LG televisions, and it does something unusual that catches people out: there is no login screen at all.

Instead the app displays the television’s MAC address, and you upload your playlist link against that MAC on the developer’s website from a phone or laptop. The television then collects it. It feels wrong the first time, but it is deliberate, and it is why the app stays so light on underpowered TV hardware.

It gives seven days free, then asks a small one-time activation fee for that specific television. That charge belongs to the app developer and has nothing to do with your subscription. If you reinstall the app or reset the TV, the stored list is wiped and needs uploading again — the cause of nearly every “playlist expired” message. The Smart IPTV guide walks through it.

Apple: a smaller field

Apple’s rules mean fewer options and no sideloading. IPTV Smarters Player is free on both iOS and tvOS and is the sensible starting point. iPlayTV is a paid app with a considerably nicer interface, and worth the money if this is your main viewing device. GSE Smart IPTV is a useful fallback because it lets you switch decoding engine, which occasionally fixes a channel that will not play elsewhere.

What actually separates a good player from a bad one

Feature lists are not especially useful here. Four things determine whether you are happy with a player day to day.

• Guide quality. You interact with the EPG more than any other screen. A bad one makes a good service feel worse than it is.
• Channel switching speed. The gap between pressing a button and seeing a picture. TiViMate is noticeably quicker than most.
• Decoder options. The ability to switch between hardware and software decoding fixes a surprising share of “this channel does not work” problems.
• Favourites that survive. Building a list of forty channels you actually watch is what makes a 25,000-channel service usable. A player that forgets them is a genuine problem.

Things worth knowing before you install anything

The app is not the subscription. Repeating it because it causes more confusion than everything else combined. Free player, paid subscription, two separate things.

Xtream Codes is easier than M3U. If a player offers both, choose Xtream. It pulls the guide and on-demand content automatically, where an M3U link often needs the guide added separately.

Your credentials work everywhere at once. The same three details set up every device you own. What limits you is simultaneous streams, which is a property of your plan rather than the app.

Install from official stores where possible. Sideloading is necessary on Firestick and fine when the source is the official APK. Downloading players from random forum links is how people acquire malware.

On a Firestick or Android TV box: TiViMate, and pay for Premium if you watch live sport, because multi-view and recording earn the ten dollars back quickly. On a Samsung or LG television: IPTV Smarters first, Smart IPTV if the set is older and struggling. On Apple hardware: Smarters to start, iPlayTV if you use it daily.
